This post will help me keep my skills up to date and hep you guys say as many stupid things as you can with no regret of being told "you stupid ass hole"

Here are some of my suggestions for all of you
First, like someone already said, do not try to translate directly spanish to english because it will not worik
second: try to write as neat and clear as possible. Do not write I'm, doesn't etc., when you are to write an essay you have to write in the correct written form and the contractions are used in the spoken form.
third: read and write as much as possible.

Keep it up, I will try to point out in red the mistakes that I see, just like Diego is doing.

Watch movies in English, listen to English spoken radio, anything that can help you improve your grammar… it’s always good to listen to imitate, just as small kids do with native languages

Maybe you dont need to go back to Interlingua, what you need is practice and if at all possible get an English speaking friend(hopefully a girlfriend) so that you can practice more and learn some new words or ways of saying those things you want to say in an English speaking environment.

In my personal experience, what really helped me to gain more confidence at speaking english after taking so many english courses, was to use it the more I could. Even if I was not sure about my spelling. I think that if i would not have done that by then, my vocaboulary would not improved nor my fluency.

So, use it... even if you speak like Vicente Fox heehe.. Do not pay attention to those who make fun of you... The one with nice english will be you afterwords.

I think this is like any other activity.... how much more do you want to learn or improve your second language? how far do you want to go? and so on...

keep it up!!

someone told me that a great place to practice is being tourist guide in Teotihuacan or places like that, where you can talk about our contry so you dont need to be an expert in the topic.
I never did it but if you dont have much to do, it could be a great experience.

It´s not the same to practice with non-native english speakers than with real ultra- fluent-ones, I personally don´t understand a half of what Jeremy Clarkson says in his show but I really try to, and every episode i understand a little bit more...
British english is harder because many word are different. (ea.bonnet = hood and such.) and of course, the accent!

I studied a full summer in Cambridge when I was 14 and oohh my god, the first days were awfal!! I didn't understand a thing... so, Again... practice! hahahahahaha

At this moment I had already finished my exam begging I will reach about a 9.2 which is at least what I need to stay in the Regional Distributor Waranty Departament... Soooo please guy... pray for me.

Well what else can I tell you... Well, during the course I felt lile an "L" because as many times the instructor asked me a question I failled them all, thats why I'm a little (much more than a little maybe a LOT) nerviously because if I dont reach my 9.2 must probably is that I'll get fired from my job... OOOPS

Also I think that the english grammar is not hard to understand, I mean what is really hard to understand is our language, English is easier (teachers I do not if that´s right, I have problems with this) because you need only to know the auxiliars verbs like do, did, etc, well that is my opinion.

This is the part of my work I love... but paperwork stinks!!

I know, we had two power plants in Mexico, the one in Campeche has a single shaft array, meaning the gas turbine and the steam turbine are coupled in one rotor, our Chihuahua power plant had a different configuration, it was a 2X1 array, two GT's on 1 ST. When down for a major maintenance, not only big trucks to move the parts, but heavy duty lifts to open the fucking thing.

The first Upper Management at COPA, were "conformado) by... Paco, Steph, Mariana and I...
As you can read, not much changing in COPA since at the begining... just have been changing the number of associates and of course Quality and Friendly situation :))

I've been at this thread for almost an hour and learnt interesting things.

First of all, I didn't know Copa came from 7000RPM, that's interesting, because many years ago I used to wonder what car club was that when I saw a 7000RPM sticker.

The best advises I've read so far are to watch English movies close captioned in English, always trying to have a dictionary next to you, so you can keep learning new words. Doing it this way is much better, because there's a bigger chance you'll keep the new words in your mind.

Also thinking in English is a very good idea. Trying to translate to the word from Spanish won't work and will take a lot of your time. So try to think in English, not in Spanish.

Do all the listening you can, songs, movies, conversations, anything. Practice is the best way yo get to like the language, and once you like it, everything gets easier.

Hello fellas!

Its a funny idea, but certainly educative. For those who are starting is a good way to get fluidity, then to those who already are proficient enough, its also a good practice not to forget.

This time I got a couple stories about engineers.

First story.

This is the electric chair room at some state prison, where the criminals are executed and the first one of the night is set and instrumented at the chair. He is a lawyer that, when requested his last wish, he argues about his innocence for almost one hour with no results.

So the executioner eventually pushes the switch and then...

Weeee...Booom...Whaaam!

Silence...and the convict starts to laugh like crazy!. Hes survided!

"Damn !" Says the executioner, so as the punishment has been conducted unsuccesfully, the law estipulates in this case the criminal should be released without any further action.

Then comes the second guy, he is also requested for the last wish, being another lawyer he tries to convince everybody again about his innocence unsuccesfully.

Then again the executioner pushes the switch and ...

Weee...Booo...Whaaam!

Silence...Second failure of the night and second release.

So for the last chance they decide to execute an engineer. They bring the guy, he is asked his last wish and he answers:

"Well...! Before that, I think that....If you give me a piece of electrical tape and pliers I can fix the chair for free in less than five minutes!"

Second story now.

This time this is hell, with all and the devil. a new condemned is delivered. It happens he is an engineer, so he says:

"Its too warm here! No A/C ?"

So the devil says:

"Dont complain about it. We have no maintenance budget here. Hardly, we can keep up with the every day living expenses."

The enginner says:

"I can fix it!"

Devil says:

"Go, do it!"

So the engineer works some time on the equipment until he manages to make the air conditioning system working back again, so the devil says again:

Hey engineer! Would you fix the water system?"

The engineer says:

"Yeah...Why not! Its been easy with the A/C. Just cleaning and recalibrating!"

So the engineer starts fixing the whole place, where it is now, not anymore hell, but a very nice and comfy property to live and stay.

After a couple weeks Saint Peter visits the devil at Hell and the conversation goes like this:

"Hey devil...! I know you have an engineer here working for you. I can see a big change around!"

Devil says:

"Yeah Pete...! This guy is really usefull and handy"

St. Peter says:

"Well you know Dev. Ive been talking with the Purgatory guys and it seems for some reason theyve done a mistake. This engineer was originally assigned to Heaven but somebody brought him here instead"

The devil says:

"Sure Pete, I knew it was a mistake but im not sending him with you after all the good work hes been doing here. Now he is mine!"

St. Peter says:

Wrong Dev! Its illegal and you know very well!"

Devil says:

"I dont care. He stays here. Period!"

St. Peter very, very upset answers:

If thats so! We.. also want him to fix our place and Papa God told me, we will sue you with the best lawyers, at he highest courts, with the best judges and with our best connections and influences, you dont stand a chance!"

So the devil finally answers back with a big, big laugh:

"Haaa, Haaa, Haaa!! Dont you remember that I got all of them with me, here at Hell and the engineer is working on their rooms now...! Where do you think you can find, if only one of them outside?"

These are real american stories told by a an engineer who is a very good friend of mine. Hope you liked both jokes.

Thanks for everyone... well after all my US warranty analist told me that I can use decaler to talk about the product i was trying to describe, all theese becaus here in the workshop we use a decaler branded RESTORE but they know restore as all of us... like an oil aditive... but well, thanks again!!

In Spain, its generic name is "galga". Its used to calibrate valves too (taqués ó buzos).

I would not say "laina" would translate literally for the word in English. I assume the appropriate term for the spark plug calibration device is spark plug gauge. However, if what you looking for is laina then I am not familiar with the term. Sorry I did not answer your question correctly.

I think that it´s not only grammar what one have to be worried about when writing in english, you have to think if it makes sense in english, translating word by word, as well translated as it may be, could give us an unrecongnizable text to an english speaker.

-The idea is to write or talk about many topics... (jokes, cars, etc) and who knows (you do not need to specify "the people" because who is used only for people so it becomes a redundancy) very well the language... can help us to increase our vocabulary and find mistakes in the grammar structures.

As a secondary topic, I think that to learn any language you dont have to focus in grammar, once you know the language then you do it.

When you learn spanish you don´t know grammar, many people talk spanish even if they cannont write it, or write very poorly.

So is better to focus on LEARN english, and then when you know it, you can master it, and have an excellent grammar.

Myself was a very bad english student in elementary and high school, but then when I went to college I was in a big trouble because some courses were given in english and you had to write essays in english, your home work, etc.

The first periods I tried to avoid english courses, but some were non-avoidable, so I had to take english curses, and start reading with my dictionary on the side and learning song lyrics, watching tv in english, etc.

Later I realized that I wasn´t that bad in english, but I was bad in learning the "traditional way". But if you give a second tought to it, it is not so "traditional way" as when you´re a child you don´t know verbs, nouns, conjugations, and so on. So for me is like triying to master a circuit, when what you need first is to learn to drive.

Stroller, BUT... before you get it, check the folding procedure, you don't want to get a PITA when you need to put it in the trunk.

Don't forget the car seat, also a must, some good brands got really bad ergonomic issues for the parents, other are really amazing "machines".

Yo don't need a huge stroller for the first 8-9 months, there's another option: a light stroller that you could use with the car carrier, take a look at this thing:

lol ... well I continue with my English lessons... fortunatelly... I have a native lenguage teacher and she improve my level in order to know more clasic "gringos" expressions, and actual lenguage... instead of old English or British English...

Now... What´s mean lol ??? Many people told me that it meaningi Lot of Laughs... but in fact, it mean laughing out loud ... eh ?? :evil ...

I think I´m ready... but I don´t have much time to practice out of lessons.. but always when I have chance... I practice my self...

The gringou Mon must speak very fluent as almost a native, but his grammar is as awful as most of gringous have lol.

On the other hand my spoken english is very rusty, but the nerdy written grammar after studying 10 years only in english is still not so bad... I hope.:fight
